Why Spa-Francorchamps is the BEST F1 track in the world (for a driver)
On my first British F3 test day at Spa-Francorchamps, it instantly became my favorite track, but my love for the place grew even more when I had my first race there.
Besides being one of the longest tracks on the F1 calendar, Spa has a few unique characteristics that make it so special. Sector 1 and Sector 3 have massive straights, making slipstreaming a very effective tool for overtaking; however, sector 2 has an abundance of downforce-reliant high speed corners. Teams/drivers have to decide whether they want to optimize for downforce or straight line speed, and for race conditions, most choose to go as low as they can go. This makes driving on the limit through corners like Pouhon and No-name incredibly exhilarating and challenging. The car never feels planted, so you're always balancing between pace and tire conservation.
Spa is one of those rare tracks where you never really know what position you'll end up at when the checkered comes out, and I think that's why we love it so much.
