Watch live from the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, D.C., United States of America, as Cardinal Donald Wuerl celebrates the 2019 Easter Vigil.
Cardinal Wuerl will celebrate the Easter Vigil Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle. In an ancient rite, a giant fire will be lit on the steps of the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle to symbolize the resurrection of Christ, the light of the world. From that fire, candles held by the individuals sitting in the pews will be lit one by one until the darkened church is full of candlelight. As the Gloria is sung, the cathedral lights will be turned on as the celebration of Christ’s coming resurrection will begin. Adults preparing to become Catholic will be baptized and confirmed during the Mass at the cathedral as well as at Masses throughout the Archdiocese of Washington. This year in the Archdiocese of Washington, more than 1,000 adults, teens, and children will be baptized or confirmed as Catholics at Easter Vigil Masses across the region. At St. Matthew’s, there will be sixteen individuals welcomed into the Catholic faith.
