Description: "Theodore Major was an English artist best known for his eclectic paintings, drawings, and prints. Major’s themes included psychological darkness, female nudes, and industrial cityscapes. Influenced by artists like L.S. Lowry, Vincent van Gogh, and Georges Rouault, his expressive brushwork and grim color schemes are hallmarks of his work. "To disturb and extend consciousness in the mind of the viewer,” the artist once said of his intent. Major's practice is notable for its unflinching populism, and his frequent refusal to sell his work to the “elite”. Born on February 19, 1908 in Wigan, United Kingdom, he studied at the Wigan Art School from 1927–1932. Later, the artist found employment in Lancashire, illustrating political cartoons for periodicals such as the Daily Mail and the Manchester Guardian. Major died at 90 on January 17, 1999 in Ormskirk, United Kingdom. Today, his works are in the collections of the Manchester Art Gallery and the Salford Art Gallery."
