Topic - Urban Forest

In the Port Phillip area, we aim to establish an urban forest to combat excessive sun exposure and enhance shade. Urban areas, responsible for 75% of global CO2 emissions, face significant climate change impacts. In Australia, high UV radiation leads to increased skin cancer risks, with over 1,400 melanoma deaths annually. By 2050, global temperatures could rise by 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius.

We focused on Balaclava Street and Carlisle Street, which currently have minimal tree coverage (6.8% canopy cover). To increase tree planting, we propose:
1. Pruning : Limited pruning to avoid harming tree health.
2. Increasing Setback Distance : Reducing the need for pruning and allowing parking spaces between trees.
3. Relocating Power Lines : Moving them to the middle of the street to avoid tree damage.
4. Creating Cable Bundles : Protecting trees, though this requires local approval and is costly.

Implementing these solutions will boost urban tree cover, reduce heat, and improve the environment. Let's start with these small steps and expand to create a greener urban landscape.
