American alligators are territorial and will become extremely aggressive during mating and nesting season or while feeding in general. They will try to chase competition away from available food source or even kill and cannibalize their own species during such confrontations. Feeding in larger groups will most likely end in a feeding frenzy, in which every alligator tries to rip a piece of meat of the prey followed by wild splashing and death roll. Aggressive behavior of alligators is also common during mating behavior, in which the strongest male fight of the weaker one to secure its position in the ranking order, which often end in death for the weaker alligator.
