On 24 January 1966, newspaper tycoon Rupert Murdoch spoke to ITN about his decision to buy a 40% share of the News of the World. After successfully acquiring a number of newspapers in Australia through the 1950s, during the 1960s Murdoch began to expand his media empire overseas. Three years after the buy-in discussed in this interview, Rupert Murdoch acquired the News of the World outright. Over the ensuing decades, Murdoch came to own hundreds of local, national, and international publishing and broadcasting outlets across the globe.

As for the News of the World, the paper closed in 2011 following revelations of the ongoing phone hacking scandal. Investigations found illegal phone hacking to be a well-known and widespread practice at the company and led to the Leveson Inquiry, the public investigation into the culture, practices, and ethics of the British press. Murdoch himself was alleged to have pressured British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Labour MPs to "back away" from looking into the scandal.

Murdoch is thought to have partially inspired the character of Logan Roy, the media magnate and Roy family patriarch in the hit HBO series Succession, created by Jesse Armstrong.
