The U.S.-headquartered social media giant said that it was aware of this activity and had taken steps to secure the compromised account.

The Twitter account of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s website narendramodi.in was hacked early on Thursday morning with hackers attempting to solicit cryptocurrency from his followers.

“We are actively investigating the situation. At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being impacted,” a Twitter spokesperson said in an emailed reply.

Twitter suffered a major hack in July this year wherein some hackers were able to get access to its internal systems to take control of the accounts of major public figures and corporations, including U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden, former U.S. President Barack Obama, billionaire Elon Musk, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Apple.

However, the hack of Mr. Modi’s account, as per investigations by Twitter, was not due to a compromise of its systems or service. There was no indication or evidence of any correlation between this account compromise and the incident that took place in July, it added.

The Twitter account for his website has 2.5 million followers, and follows 968 accounts.

The latest incident comes after several accounts of prominent personalities were hacked in July.

Hackers then had accessed Twitter's internal systems to hijack some of the platform's top voices including US presidential candidate Joe Biden, former US President Barack Obama and billionaire Elon Musk, and used them to solicit digital currency.

was hacked with a series of tweets asking its followers to donate to a relief fund through cryptocurrency. Twitter said it was aware of the activity and has taken steps to secure the compromised account.

"We are actively investigating the situation. At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being impacted," a Twitter spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.

The compromised account has about 2.5 million followers.

After hacking the @narendramodi_in Twitter account, which is the Prime Minister's personal website, the cybercriminal reportedly sent out posts seeking donations for the PM National Relief Fund for COVID-19 using crypto currency.
Accounts of high-profile users like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Barack Obama, Jeff Bezos and others were compromised on July 15.

In an update on its blog on July 30, Twitter had said attackers had used credentials of some employees to access its internal systems and gain information about its processes.

The attackers targeted 130 Twitter accounts, ultimately Tweeting from 45, accessing the DM inbox of 36, and downloading the Twitter Data of 7 accounts, it had said.
