How to Make a Mask: Step-by-Step Guide

Materials Needed:
Hat (or tin foil and tape for making a hat)
Old wire hanger (or any slightly bendable wire)
Aluminum foil
Duct tape
Masking Tape
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
PVA glue and water (or paper mache mix/flour)
Newspaper (or kitchen paper for the final layer)
Guesso
Acrylic Paint (white and other colors for details)
Super glue
Mesh see through black fabric (optional)
Curly wig
Wire cutters
Scissors
Acrylic Sealer (liquid or Spray)

Instructions:

Prepare the Hat Base
Option 1: Use a hat from the dollar store or any hat you have.
Option 2: Create a hat using tin foil and tape to fit your head.

Create the Mouth Base
Take an old wire hanger, cut it, and shape it to form the mouth.
Glue the shaped wire to the hat.

Shape the Mouth with Aluminum Foil
Use aluminum foil to shape the upper and lower parts of the mouth.
Refer to a photo for accuracy and creativity in shaping.
This shape is crucial as it forms the base of the mask, so WORK IT! :)

Strengthen the Shape
Wrap the aluminum foil with tape (duct tape works well, but don’t use too much as it can be heavy).
Wrap the hat and add foil to the sides of the mouth and cheeks.
Check the fit on your head and make any necessary adjustments.

Add Facial Details
Draw where the eyes and nose will go.
Add more aluminum foil to these areas for volume and shape (IMPORTANT)
Secure with tape and hot glue if needed.

Apply Paper Mache
Mix PVA glue with water (or use a paper mache mix or flour).
Tear newspaper into pieces, soak in the glue mixture, and apply to the mask.
Cover the entire mask and let it dry overnight.
Repeat the process SEVERAL times for added strength, letting it dry overnight each time.

Shape Eyeballs and Tongue
Form eyeballs and the tongue using aluminum foil.
Wrap them in masking tape and cover with the glue mixture and newspaper until sturdy.
Let dry overnight.

Optional Final Layer
For a textured finish, cover the mask with the glue-water mix and kitchen paper (or use paper clay for details but dont overdue the paper clay, because it can get heavy on the mask).
Let it dry overnight.

Prepare for Painting
Apply a few layer of gesso or white paint (non-glossy) to the mask.
Paint the eyes and tongue white and let them dry overnight.

Paint the Mask
Paint the entire mask, including eyes, tongue, and add details, shade and highlights if you like.
Let the paint dry completely.

Attach Eyes and Tongue
Use super glue to attach the eyes and tongue to the mask.

Create and Attach Teeth
Form teeth from aluminum foil, cover with the glue mixture and newspaper, and let dry overnight. You can do this part in many different ways. I did it like this because I made this mask back in 2020 and I didn't have much at home, mind you we were in quarantine and every store including online were close. So I had to work with what I had at the moment, but you can use airdrying clay or anything you like.
Paint the teeth and glue them into place in the mouth.

Finish the Mask
Seal the entire mask with an acrylic sealer (sspray or liquid)
Glue a pantyhose fabric or any see throu fabric, or mesh to the inside of the mask to cover your face.
Attach a curly wig to the back of the mask.

Final Touches
Review and make any final adjustments.
