HIV
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is transmitted through sexual contact, blood transfusions, child delivery, or sharing needles. The virus weakens the immune system, killing the white blood cells that help fight off disease or harmful organisms. Symptoms vary depending on the stage of infection. Over time, the disease can progress, causing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which is life threatening. There is no cure for HIV/AIDS, but there are medications that can significantly slow the progression of the disease.
