Night photography is one of those types of photography where everything changes. Its so much different than grabbing your camera and going outside during the day. During the day you have tons of light to work with and no trouble finding shade or somewhere to hide from harsh light.

When its cloudy... perfect! Photos for days!

However, night time, the suns gone down and the only light you have is the light from the moon, stars and city lights.

This is why it’s a different type of challenge. Night photography requires a longer shutter, or higher ISO. Which in turn, causes blurry images if hand held or movement, or noisy images.

So how do you handle that? Practice and some tips and tricks.

First tip for night photography is having a tripod. Using a tripod can come in handy when you need those long exposures. This way you remove camera shake and blurry photos. It also allows you to get those long exposures and light trails as cars drive through your open shutter.

In addition, using a 2+ second timer or a remote trigger can help remove the shake from the action of pushing the shutter button.

To get those light trails, set your camera on a tripod. Set the shutter to 10-20 seconds. Adjust the other settings for proper exposure. Press the shutter as cars are driving through the frame. The car will not show up but the light trails will give you an awesome quality to your image. Use rule of thirds, and leading lines to create some aesthetic photos!

Using the LED lights, or lights of businesses can help create some awesome bokeh in the background with your subjects. You can also use LEDs of shops to cast cool lighting effects on to your model.

Make sure to carry some water with you. One, because you’ll be taking photos and get thirsty, but also, because you can pour some water on the ground if its super dry to create cool reflections. If you cant find a puddle that is.

Finally light writing or light painting. This is one of the most popular forms of night photography and is super easy. Set your shutter to 10-20 seconds. Using a flashlight, your phone’s flashing or another source of light. Once your shutter is active, run into frame and wave the light in patterns or writing etc and then run out before the shutter ends. This can create cool effects in your image.

Night Photography is a lot of fun but it can be very frustrating. With these tips, maybe you can create some cool photos and have fun in the process.
