In this video We will take a walk along Novaya Ploshchad Street, from Lubyanka to Ilyinka Street.

About the street:

In fact, New Square is a passage from Lubyanka to Ilyinsky Gate Square. Its continuation is the Old Square. Once the passage went along the Kitay-Gorod wall, destroyed in 1928. In the past, New Square was located inside the Kitaygorodskaya wall and was a narrow strip between the wall itself and the line of houses in Kitai-Gorod. From the outside there was Kitaygorodsky passage.

For many years a busy market moved here from Manezhnaya Square on New Square. Here they traded in old dresses, footwear, popular prints and all sorts of household utensils.

“Before reaching the Ilyinsky Gate to the left, New Square, where the flea market is located, is 45 fathoms long. Here, in the open air, hundreds of poorly dressed and shod people crowd around the whole day to buy and resell old things - scum of society, experiencing all kinds of climatic hardships, ”wrote a guide to Moscow in 1887.

The square began at the Nikolsky gate of Kitay-gorod, Ostrovsky wrote about them - 'at the gate where they sell pictures.' Here you could buy all sorts of books. Along with empty and sometimes even harmful little books, one could find primers, books of classics on the market. The shops of famous publishers were located here. The famous Russian publisher I.D. Sytin started out as a 'boy' in a small bookstore on New Square.

Only in 1899 the flea market was transferred to Sadovniki.

In place of the old monastic farmsteads that stretched along the Kitay-Gorod wall, multi-storey offices began to appear, built by modern architects. The houses were erected with the assumption that only the upper floors would be visible above the massive Chinese wall.

After the wall was demolished, a public garden was laid out in its place, in which second-hand booksellers continued to trade.

Now one side of New Square is occupied by the Polytechnic Museum, the even side is made up of office buildings, and the square itself and Kitaygorodsky Proezd are a single roadway along which cars rush from the Lubyanka down to the Moscow River.
