Babylon is cinema. In this video essay, I discuss why Damien Chazelle's Babylon starring Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt is pure cinema. In the years to come, I think Babylon might be regarded as Damien Chazelle's cult masterpiece, and the ending scene with Diego Calva's Manny captures what it means to love film. The film displays the best and worst of Hollywood, showing what it means to be passionate about filmmaking, but then also the potential downfalls of being a Hollywood star. Babylon is a 2022 American epic period comedy drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, La La Land & First Man). The film features an ensemble cast that includes Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, and Li Jun Li. Its plot chronicles the rise and fall of multiple characters during Hollywood's transition from silent to sound films in the late 1920s.
