Why has GDP per capita been stagnant in Canada for the last ten years? That was the question posed by the CBC reporter to this professor from Alberta. He didn't have a clear answer, but to me it is obvious. In a single word, government. High taxes and persistent inflation are the cause of our economic malaise. That, coupled with a general anti-business environment, crippling regulations, and intervention in the economy.
The truth is we are living in age of 21st century mercantalism. We don't have free markets, we have corporate welfare for those who have connections with the political elite, and high taxes for everyone else. The government picks winners and losers, and this has made foreign corporations loath to invest in our country. Without business investment, and with consumer savings erode by inflation, our economy has stalled.
The solution is simple. We need a drastic reduction in government spending.
