Anulom Vilom and Nadi Shodhan is mentioned in ancient yogic texts like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Gheranda Samhita. These texts describe the technique as a means to balance the flow of prana (life force energy) and purify the body's nadis (energy channels).
In Anulom Vilom, there is no need to hold the breath, whereas, in Nadi Sodhan, one needs to hold the breath inside for as long as possible. In Anulom Vilom Prana is inhaled from left nostrils and exhaled from the right one, after that it is inhaled from the right nostril and exhaled from the left one. In Nadi Shodhan, the Prana is inhaled from left nostrils, then we hold our breath and exhaled from the right one.
It is advised that one starts their practice with Anulom Vilom in the ration 1:1. You can start it at a count of 5 and practice it till you reach the count of 12 and you will slowly prepare your body for retention that is holding of the breath.
