General Pyotr Grigorenko, a hero of two wars, a scientist and a committed Marxist, became disillusioned with the Soviet regime towards the end of his life and began to campaign actively for human rights. Grigorenko's world fame made it impossible to get rid of him through prison or the Gulag. Peter Grigorenko became the first known victim of punitive psychiatry in the USSR. The Soviet authorities subjected him to a system of punishment for his beliefs, which they later successfully applied to hundreds of other dissidents.
