Skopje, North Macedonia — a city I knew almost nothing about before arriving, and honestly, this might be one of the most bizarre capital cities in Europe. In this Skopje travel vlog, part 15 of my Lost In Europe Series, I leave Sofia and cross the border into North Macedonia to find out exactly what Skopje is like. This video is a mix of first impressions, strange encounters, local food, and spontaneous adventures — from chaotic traffic and towering monuments to eerie backstreets, fortress walls, and cheap meals that cost less than £4. Skopje Macedonia genuinely surprised me. I arrived with no expectations and found myself walking through a city centre packed with massive statues, fountains, wide bridges, and neoclassical buildings — alongside pockets of gritty reality, street dogs, local life, and a man casually carrying a snake. You’ll also see Skopje drone shots scattered throughout as I explore the area, giving you a wider perspective of this place so many people skip. I also speak with locals, including my accidental Macedonian tour guide, who shares his thoughts on why Skopje North Macedonia is such a unique and complicated place to live. If you're wondering what is Skopje like, what can I do in Skopje, or just asking yourself is Skopje worth visiting, then hopefully this gives you a raw, honest insight. We explore a few of the top things to do in Skopje, including Alexander the Great Square, the old bazaar area, and a few quieter corners that are far from the tourist trail. There’s a strange contrast between the city’s over-the-top centre and the surrounding blocks of tall, grey apartment buildings — the kind of contrast that makes Skopje 2025 such a fascinating place to experience. I share some tips too, making this something of a Skopje travel guide along the way.
