Title:
Engineering the Kitaev chain

Speaker:
Alberto Bordin

Abstact:
This line of research is inspired by the fascinating idea of combining quantum information, typically very fragile, with the concept of topology, i.e. robustness against local perturbations. One of the simplest examples of such a system is represented by the Kitaev chain model. It describes a chain of N sites, where the quantum information can be stored non-locally at the two ends of the chain into Majorana modes. Here, we demonstrate that a Kitaev chain can be engineered using semiconducting quantum dots coupled by superconductors. We realized a minimal chain with N=2, which is too short to be topologically protected, but can already host a pair of Majorana modes if fine-tuned to a sweet-spot. Finally, we scale-up the system to three sites and measure the signatures of Majorana protection against the individual perturbation of every parameter. We conclude by discussing the implications of our findings and future research directions.

Biography of Alberto Bordin:
Alberto Bordin received his MSc in physics at the Scuola Normale Superiore and the University of Pisa, Italy. Since 2020, he is a co-founder of an AI startup called Olivia and a PhD candidate in the group of Leo Kouwenhoven at QuTech. His main interest is developing novel quantum technologies, such as the engineering of Kitaev chains, a promising platform for protected qubits.

ABOUT QuTech360 Seminars:
QuTech360 is a series of seminars where people from all QuTech divisions have the opportunity to build a deep understanding of the topics researched at QuTech. In each seminar, a quantum expert will guide us through one of the main topics studied in their group.
