On September 8, 1941, German troops captured the city of Shlisselburg and cut off Leningrad from land. Hitler planned to wipe the city off the face of the earth. "... In this war being waged for the right to exist, we are not interested in preserving at least part of the population ..." - stated in his directive. Approximately 2.5 million inhabitants and 340 thousand people living in the suburbs ended up in the blockade ring. During the first blockade winter in Leningrad, more than 4,000 people died every day. During the siege, about 150 thousand shells were fired at the city and over 107 thousand incendiary and high-explosive bombs were dropped. The blockade of the city continued until January 27, 1944. It lasted 872 days. According to official Soviet data, 632,253 people died in the city during the blockade. Other estimates put the figure at around 1,500,000.
