How to convert between metric units for area e.g. square metres, hectares etc (with examples)

Metric unit conversions for area work in a similar manner to other metric unit conversions. Instead of multiply or dividing by 10, 100 or 1000, we multiply or divide by the square of 10, 100 or 1000 since we are dealing with area, not length.
