This simple drink is made with Rye Whiskey, Benedictine, Aromatic Bitters and a Lemon Twist. It is easy to make and even easier to drink. It's a cousin to the Manhattan ( • Manhattan - The Classic Rye Whiskey C... ). It's also similar to a Vieux Carré ( • Vieux Carré - New Orleans Best Cockta... ) or a Brainstorm ( • Brainstorm - a Vintage Cocktail with ... ). But it's definitely got it's own character.
This cocktail is the evolutionary offspring of a late-19th Century drink called the Monte Carlo Punch. According to Daly's Bartender's Encyclopedia from 1903, "This punch was originally prepared at Monte Carlo, the world-renowned gambling resort, and immediately became popular with the habitues, and the formula was brought to the United States by an American gentleman, and it has since become extremely popular with the members of the most exclusive clubs in the country." However, it morphed from a Brandy drink with orange juice and crushed ice, to a Rye cocktail, served neat with a lemon twist.
When selecting your Benedictine, make sure you're buying DOM Benedictine and not B&B (Benedictine and Brandy). The B&B is just a premixed cocktail and is not the same as Benedictine.
I like using RIttenhouse Bottled in Bond Rye for this drink, but feel free to make it with your favorite bottle. Cheers!
