In this video, I demonstrate how to use a u-substitution and partial fraction decomposition to integrate the function:

cot(x) / [cos^2(x) + cos(x) + 1]

This is a challenging integral to perform and it involves quite a few steps.

Performing integration is a creative skill that comes with practice. There are 4 primary analytical methods:

The power integral which is used primarily to integrate polynomials
Manipulation of the integrand to make the integral simpler (such as partial fraction decomposition)
Substitution to make the integral simpler
Integration by parts
