In this video, we're looking at the Xiaomi/70Mai Dash Cam Pro. The dash cam pro is a fairly well-priced dashboard camera and we'll look at how it performs. You can find the Dash Cam pro on Banggood here: http://bit.ly/XMF_BG70MDCP use coupon code: xiaomify to get the cam for only $45 USD!
The installation of the dashcam itself was really easy and straight forward. Simply clean your windshield, add the anti-static sticker to the windshield and stick the dashcam pro on the sticker. It is powered over USB, and a car cigarette lighter adapter is included.
The 70 Mai Dash cam pro has built-in WiFi which allows you to set it up using the 70Mai APP. I have gotten the camera from banggood, a Chinese reseller, but the camera and the APP were all in English. (Even though I had downloaded the app from the Chinese app store.)
You will have to insert a micro-SD card in the camera, and it will store its footage and pictures on the SD card. These are being recorded in loop-cycles so the first clip will be overwritten once the card is full. Accident clips (recorded when a collision is detected) are stored in a separate folder, as with clips you force it to record, and these won't be overwritten by the loop cycle recording.
The quality of the footage (h.265 codec) is quite impressive during the day. The videos look vibrant and sharp. At night the quality is a bit less (as expected) and the footage comes out a bit more grainy, although it's not THAT bad considering these shots were taken in really dark situations.
For its purpose (proving who is wrong during car accidents) it should be good enough, also at night. Although, during the day you could also recognize license plate numbers, with night footage that is fairly difficult to see.
You can also control the dash cam pro by voice. It has 4 commands: turn the display on/off, take a picture and record a video. The dash cam pro responds really well and really quick to these voice-commands, so that is a nice touch.
One thing I would have loved to see was an option to record time lapses or motion detected footage when the camera is in parking mode. This would allow it to serve more as a 'car security camera' as well, unfortunately, that is not the case with the current firmware. (Perhaps that could be added in a firmware update?)
Overall the 70Mai Dash Cam Pro is a really decent dashboard camera and offers great value for money, as it is a really well-priced camera.
