Making multiple objects into one path is so simple using compound paths. Grouping elements or merging them is not the only trick you can use.

It allows you to combine heaps of paths, shapes and designs into one shape so illustrator sees it as one object. This will help you out when you're doing styles, appearance and gradient work. It's easy to create just select all the objects you want to make into one object or path and press Ctrl/Cmd + 8.
