This is the video#17 in our CCNAPHILIPPINES VIDEO SERIES. Let's call this How switch work [GNS3 Demo]
On this video, I explained how a switch work. I basically created a simple topology to show how to switch exactly process frames from the first time it was received until it updates its mac address-table.
You'll learn in the simplest explanation how frames are forwarded in layer 2 switches. I used GNS3 as the simulator on this demo.
Basically, this is how a switch works:
First-time communication?
-If it's the first time the device connected to a switch communicates, the switch broadcast "frames" to all its ports except where it came from.
-Only the concern device will respond to the request
-Other devices will drop the frame
-The switch will now update its mac address-table and record all the information e.g vlan, port, mac address of the device
Not first time?
-The switch will scan its mac address-table and check where the concerned mac address located
-It will forward the frame on that specific port only
I hope this video provides value and another knowledge to your CCNA journey. More videos to come!
