Dr. Oluwadamilola “Lola” Fayanju, Chief of Breast Surgery and Surgical Director of the Rena Rowan Breast Center at the Abramson Cancer Center, shares how her maternal grandmother, a midwife from Lagos, Nigeria, inspired her decision to become a doctor at the age of 8.

Dr. Fayanju discusses her goal to build Penn Medicine’s research portfolio and to deliver world-class care for breast cancer patients. Her focus is on providing high-quality, equitable healthcare for everyone who walks through the door.

Dr. Fayanju primarily cares for breast cancer patients. She also treats individuals with benign breast disease and helps her patients find the treatment options that best fit their health goals.

“My job is to be the captain of their ship, getting them started on their treatment and helping them hopefully come to the point where they realize that their cancer is just a blip in their otherwise long life,” Dr. Fayanju said.

The best part of Dr. Fayanju’s job is when patients allow her into their lives at very intimate, personal and challenging moments.

“I truly think it is a privilege to be a physician,” she said. “And that privilege does not come from in the licenses that we receive, it’s from the trust our patients put into us. And for that, I am very grateful.”
