This video is mostly an overview of reasons that we (society) are often captured in a fantasy world of collective illusions. The book recently published by Todd Rose is a real eye opener, and he gives numerous examples of these collective illusions, how they have great power over us, how they arise in the first place, and how we can recalibrate to the truth. The main reason that we get trapped in these collective illusions is that our brains prioritize conformity to the tribe, or thinking like the group in order to stay in the group. One of the things humans hate and fear the most is to be ostracized by the group, and years ago in hunter-gatherer times being ostracized was often the same as a death sentence.
One of the great examples of a collective illusion is bottled water. The global market for bottled water is $270 billion dollars, and is expected to reach $500 billion by 2030. This is insane, when you really think about it, because the vast majority of places have tap water that is just as good, in fact even better and safer in 99% of places (exceptions were Flint, Michigan, for example). Why do people pay as much for bottled water as they pay for gasoline, when they can get drinking water from the tap for next to nothing.
I also chat about some of the other work that Ted Rose is doing, and the extremely interesting think-tank that he cofounded called Populance.
