Chemins III is one of many pieces derived from Berio's Sequenza VI for solo viola (1967). Berio initially adapted it for viola and nine instruments in Chemins II (with the viola part being identical to Sequenza VI). Then he reworked Chemins II expanded Chemins II into Chemins III for viola, nine instruments and orchestra, with the viola + nine instruments playing the same music as Chemins II)
