More than 180 inmates evacuate jail fire in Portsmouth
More than 150 inmates were forced to evacuate Portsmouth City Jail early this morning. Portsmouth Sheriff Michael Moore, says the fire broke out in the jail's basement at around 1:30 a.m. Moore said the blaze appears to have started in the storage room in the basement before moving through the elevator shaft and spreading to the eighth floor. For now, inmates are being transferred to the former Hampton Roads Regional Jail. Portsmouth Fire and Rescue is still investigating the incident.
