In this video I will be explaining how to complete the new elf city content, the gauntlet. It is similar to dungeoneering in RS3. You go in with nothing, gather resources for 10 minutes and then with the scraps you’ve collected you attempt to kill the boss. The boss is much harder than any dungeoneering boss and requires careful preparation.
Requirements – The gauntlet is a fairly difficult combat challenge. You are going to want 85+ magic, ranged and defence to do it consistently. You also are going to want to get your mining, fishing, farming and woodcutting as high as possible, as these all aid you in collecting resources more quickly.
GEAR - When you begin you will have no armor and have a crystal scepter equipped. This scepter may seem like it is just a worthless weapon to be thrown away as soon as you find something better, but this scepter is actually what allows you to open new rooms. If you drop it on the ground, you will not be able to advance. Then you have a crystal hatchet, pickaxe and harpoon. These allow you to gather all 3 of the dungeon’s main resources. You will also have a pestle and mortar, which is necessary for grinding crystal shards to make potions, and a teleport seed, which when consumed will teleport you to the starting room of the dungeon.
When foraging resources and killing monsters you will find crystal shards. These allow you to forge weapons, armors, teleport seeds and potions at the singing bowl in the first room. Vials can be crafted using 10 shards, which can then be turned into a potion by filling the vial with water at the pump, then combining a grym leaf with it and finally 10 shards that have been ground up using the pestle and mortar. The potion provides the same amount of prayer points a dose as a prayer potion and provides the effect of a stamina potion, while restoring 40 run energy.
Weapons can be crafted after obtaining a weapon mold from a monster. You can craft a halberd, bow or staff, all of these requiring 20 shards to craft. The bow and staff require neither arrows nor runes, so I find them much more useful than the halberd. These weapons can be further upgraded from tier 1 to tier 2 for 60 additional shards, and tier 2 to tier 3 by using an upgrade piece from one of the demi-bosses on the outskirts of the dungeon. These upgrades are like going from a rune scimitar, to a dragon scimitar and then to a Ghrazi rapier so they are very important.
Armors can also be crafted using a piece of bark, linen, ore and 40 shards per piece. These can also be upgraded to tier 2 using 2 of each resource and 60 shards. Finally they can be upgraded to tier 3 using 3 of each resource and 80 crystal shards. These armors have equal defenses against all attack styles and no negative attack bonuses.
Resources can be collected from trees, ore veins and spools you will find throughout the dungeon. These provide 3 resources each before being depleted permanently. While collecting from a resource node you may occasionally find crystal shards as well. Items left on the ground in the dungeon do not despawn like in dungeoneering.
You can also fish paddlefish from the pools you will find throughout the dungeon. These provide 4 fish before being depleted. These fish heal exactly the same as sharks and will be your only method of healing.
The monsters you will encounter are mostly fairly standard beasts, wolves, spiders and scorpions to name a few. These have varying combat levels; a higher combat monster will provide more crystal shards and are more likely to drop resources. On the very outskirts of the dungeon (where you are no longer able to go any further and hit a wall), 3 different demi-bosses can spawn. These include a massive bear, dark beast and dragon. The bear drops an upgrade component for the halberd, dragon for staff and dark beast for bow. I typically hunt for a dragon or dark beast ASAP because these drastically increase your damage output. These monsters can hit fairly hard so you want to protect against their respective style (bear melee, dragon magic, darkbeast ranged.
There is also the main goal of the dungeon, the boss in the center the Crystalline Hunllef. After 10 minutes have expired you will be teleported into the boss arena and forced to face the boss. This area cannot be exited. You can also enter manually before the timer expires. This boss will swap through full protection prayers every 7 times it is attacked by a different weapon than it is protecting. This forces you to bring 2 different weapons. It can use every combat style, but will only melee if approached. This is why I find the halberd to be underwhelming.
