Cape Cod is facing a big problem. Over the last 40 years the number of developments like single family homes has been unprecedented. As a result wastewater runoff is at an all time high from sources like septic, lawn fertilizer, and roadways. The result is high amounts of nitrogen in saltwater estuaries that have traditionally been home to native shellfish like Quahog clams, scallops, and more, resulting in dead zones now void of life. Certain towns in Cape Cod have experimented with allowing shellfish dredgers into new zones to see if turning the ocean floor can aerate the hypoxic environment, and maybe even bring back the shellfish!
