2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee First Look: The SUV Returns In Its Traditional Form

The three-row jeep grand cherokee L's smaller sibling finally reveals itself, and predictably the 2022 jeep grand cherokee looks every part the stubbier version of its L-badged counterpart, with a wheelbase 5.0 inches shorter than the L's lengthened measurement. Meanwhile, the overall length of the two-row Jeep is 11.4 inches shorter than the three-row model's. The Grand Cherokee's lesser length also results in 13.8 cubic feet less cargo space aft of the first row, as well as 1.2 inches less second-row legroom.

So, yes, the 2022 jeep grand cherokee is smaller and less spacious than the L. In any event, choosing the Grand Cherokee might make sense for many consumers. Not just because it's sure to cost a few bills less than the L, but also because its more manageable size affords the Grand Cherokee additional off-road prowess courtesy of improved breakover and departure angles. Plus, the Grand Cherokee gains an off-road-oriented Trailhawk trim that's currently missing from the L's trim line (it is possible the Grand Cherokee L adds the Trailhawk trim to its line for 2022, though).

Same goes for the plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain setup, dubbed 4xe, that Jeep plans to offer on the 2022 Grand Cherokee, but currently does not include as an option on the L. Like the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, the Grand Cherokee 4xe relies on a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors—one sandwiched between the engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, the other a starter-generator in the engine bay—to deliver a peak output of 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. A 17-kWh battery pack, meanwhile, affords a manufacturer-estimated 25 miles of electric driving range. And yes, you can option get Grand Cherokee 4xe in Trailhawk trim.

Not feeling the complicated plug-in powertrain of the 4xe? No worries, as the Grand Cherokee is also available with the L's 293-hp 3.6-liter V-6 or 357-hp 5.7-liter V-8 engines. Both pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Look for V-6 and V-8 2022 jeep grand cherokees to go on sale later this year, with the plug-in Grand Cherokee 4xe following in early 2022. While Jeep's yet to reveal pricing for the two-row Grand Cherokee, we wager it'll undercut the $38,790 starting price of today's Grand Cherokee L by a few grand. So, if you like the Grand Cherokee L's sleek new looks but don't need its extra row of seats or body length, Jeep has you covered.
