What if I tell you that if you have been using the same password for multiple websites from a long long time, your password is probably already cracked? That's right, your password is potentially even exposed publicly on the Internet for anyone to view!
But how is that possible, you certainly did not leak your password yourself.. right?
Watch this video to understand it!
A data breach is an incident where the data of a website or company gets exfiltrated by hackers and is publicly exposed on the Dark Web hacking forums for sale. All the data that is exposed in a breach is accessible by anyone. Many companies (even big ones like Facebook, Linkedin, and Zomato) suffered massive data breaches in the past, and the breached data is publicly available.
If you want to check whether your details have been compromised in any data breach, you can use this awesome website: https://haveibeenpwned.com/
Credential stuffing is a type of attack where hackers use stolen credentials (from data breaches) to take over accounts of users on a site.
The best way to stay safe from credential stuffing is to use a unique, randomly generated password for every website you use. This way, even if one of the websites you use gets breached, your compromised credentials won't work on other websites you use.
If the passwords are hashed, hackers can crack them by brute forcing them against a list of potential passwords (wordlist) by using fast cracking tools like hashcat.
