To solve an inequality using a number line, you graph the solution on a number line and visually determine the values that satisfy the inequality. Here are the steps to solve an inequality using a number line:
Plot the inequality on a number line: Draw a number line and plot the values that satisfy the inequality using either a hollow dot (for less than and greater than) or a filled dot (for less than or equal to and greater than or equal to).
Determine the values that satisfy the inequality: Based on the inequality symbol, determine which direction the solution lies on the number line. For example, if the inequality is x less than 3, then the solution lies to the left of 3.
Shade the region of the number line that satisfies the inequality: Based on the direction of the solution, shade the region of the number line that satisfies the inequality.
For example, to solve the inequality x greater than 2, follow these steps:
Plot the inequality on a number line: Draw a number line and plot the value 2 with a hollow dot, representing x greater than 2.
Determine the values that satisfy the inequality: Since x is greater than 2, all the values to the right of 2 on the number line satisfy the inequality.
Shade the region of the number line that satisfies the inequality: Shade the region to the right of 2, representing all the values that satisfy the inequality x greater than 2.
