The discovery of "a Higgs-like boson" made for a memorable contribution to the July 4 fireworks in the high-energy physics world. But the Higgs is only the final piece in the Standard Model, a puzzle long in the building, which itself makes up only a small part of the ultimate puzzle of the universe.

During this video, recorded on Aug. 24, 2012, at the SLAC 50th anniversary scientific symposium, Andreas Hoecker of CERN gives a lesson in symmetry-breaking, matter-conferring mechanisms, and all things Higgs. He also talks about finding what the Higgs doesn't explain, and what ground is left for high-energy physics to cover. (Hint: It's Einstein's claim to fame.)
