The human penis has the shape of a mushroom. Dr. med. Dr. phil. Stefan Buntrock, urologist from Göttingen, explains on UroChannel the evolutionary theory behind this shape. Survival of the fittest means that men have developed certain strategies to promote their own genes and to sabotage the genes of other men. One of those strategies is the shape of the penis. It works like a plunger and causes semen displacement of other men in case the woman has had sex with multiple partners. Especially the coronal ridge (sulcus coronarius) is important as it optimizes semen displacement. Research shows that already one thrust is able to remove approximately 91% of the already vaginally deposited ejaculate. How this all works has been tested in a number of lab experiments with phallus and vaginal models. In a survey it was additionally noted, that sexual behavior changed in a high number of participants after the couple had been separated for a period. Thrusting was then deeper, more frequent and more rigorous. In interpretation of this behavior one could argue that it furthers semen displacement in case the woman did have another partner during that period.
