The film is set in early 1770s Denmark. The Danish King Christian VII, who suffers from a serious mental illness, prefers to spend time in the brothels of Copenhagen, thus arousing the hatred of the young Queen Caroline Matilda. A young German doctor, Johann Friedrich Struensee, soon appears in the King's suite, who is able to influence Christian VII favorably and gain his trust, gaining a number of government posts. Struensee also becomes close to Caroline Mathilde. But Queen Mother Juliana Maria cannot accept this state of affairs....
