The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine once again showed the crucial role of railways in the areas of civilian and military logistics.
In addition to military transports and evacuation of 4 million people, Ukrainian Railways also took a new role in the transport of grain and other existential agro-commodities towards Europe, having in mind that Russia captured or cut off many important Black Sea Ports which usually handle a large share of Ukraine's external trade.
Having this in mind, we wanted to discuss the role of Ukraine's railways during the war, but also to show some history of Ukrainian railways, how they function, what were their transport effects, before the war and now, and of course some exciting facts and figures about Ukrainian railways and transport in general.
Ukrainian Railways indeed have become the lifeline of the country. In impossible conditions, railway workers organize and manage trains. Railway workers evacuate residents to safe places. Railway workers repair destroyed engineering structures, systems, and tracks - faster than ever. Railway workers also serve Armed Forces. Railway workers transport cargo so that the world does not starve. Railway workers sacrifice themselves for their country and for the world.
