Marcus Aurelius and Stoicism - Part 1
What is stoicism? in a nutshell, the main theme of stoicism - to understand what is under my control and what's not?
- can control my reactions, my emotions, living by your virtues and doing the right thing
- can't control external events (cutting you off), illness - you can try and be healthy, but you may still get sick or get an injury, and so on, you can't control fame, reputation, what people think of you, and so on.. you can't control most outside events..
You can only really control one thing - your own reaction to the things that happen to you. that's it.
You have to accept what's out of your control, have the courage to change the things you can, and know which is which.
Beyond that, stoics are also big on trying to understand their emotions. they analyze emotions and understand that emotions are based on beliefs (sometimes false beliefs) and expectations. they don't become the emotion.. they think about the thinking that created that emotion.
Conform to reality rather than have reality conform to their desires.
They love to turn tragedy into triumph .. they turn adversity into advantage.
