Back in 2010, competition between ecommerce builders was pretty even. Then in 2015 something happened. Shopify began to pull away from the pack and became the industry leader. So what happened?
According to Shopify's CEO Tobi Lutke, "before Shopify came along the ecommerce industry was like MP3 players before the iPod... competitors had tons of advanced features but were bulky, hard to use and looked horrible."
Even though this a quote from Shopify's CEO, I actually think it's accurate. The story of Shopify's success is largely a story about winning a market by building a more intuitive and innovative product.

Shopify's App Store — Shopify's most important feature. The Shopify core covers 80% of what users need and the app store covers the remaining 20%. Keeping the 20% out of the core is the reason why Shopify's interface never feels overwhelming or bloated (unlike competitors). The app store lets users add new features when they need them— but otherwise they never see them in the interface.
Shopify Payments — Shopify is the only ecommerce builder that's launched their payment provider system. Every other ecommerce builder requires a 3rd prty payment provider. Not only does this make it much easier for new stores to get up and selling, it's also becoming another source of innovation for Shopify to differentiate from competitors.
Intuitive — Shopify is known for being intuitive— especially when compared to comeptitors. Language is clear and rarely ambiguous. Interfaces never get too overwhelming. It still has a learning curve, but it's intuitve.
Themes - Shopify provides 8 official, free themes. Beyond that you can buy themes from either official or unofficial theme providers.
Pricing - Don't miss Shopify lite ($9 / month) at the bottom of the page. Otherwise there are three main plans with differences around gift cards, reporting, 3rd party shipping, staffing and credit card transaction fees. Shopify Plus is for larger brands and costs $2,000 - $40,000 / month.
