The Crown had two-door hardtops from the 3rd generation that appeared in 1967 to the 6th generation that was discontinued in 1983, but the situation at that time and now is completely different. At that time, it was common practice to prepare a 2-door hardtop (coupe) for a luxury car, and it was naturally set for rival Cedric / Gloria.
However, we are in an era where cars without rear doors, whether hatchbacks or SUVs, cannot be sold. The reason why we are planning a 2-door coupe in such a situation is because we are looking at overseas markets, not Japan. Overseas, there are still many countries and regions where “luxury coupe” is the object of admiration.
It can be seen from the fact that premium brands such as Benz, BMW, and Audi always have a coupe lineup in the C, D, and E segments. Overseas, the coupe is a necessary item to raise the brand image. Everyone knows Crown in Japan, but it is unknown overseas (famous in China).
Under such circumstances, preparing a 2-door coupe (and a convertible) to convey what kind of car the Crown is is actually a "royal road" method. From this autumn to 2024, crossovers, sports, sedans, and estates will be introduced sequentially, and the 2-door coupe is expected to appear in 2025 after that.
Of course, if the sales of the Crown series are not as good as expected, it may be shelved. It is true that they feel the need to throw away and prepare a stylish 2-door coupe body for the reborn crown. On top of that, if there is a convertible, it will be a car that attracts the interest of young wealthy people in each country. I would love to see it come to fruition.
