Van Jones explains the difference between ‘cheap patriotism’ and ‘deep patriotism
When Colin Kaepernick kneeled in protest during the playing of the national anthem at a preseason NFL game, it was hard to see how much conversation, and ire, would rise to the surface. Predictably, deplorables like Donald Trump gave the old American aphorism “Love it or leave it” while everyone else said something like “this is what America is about.” Van Jones was on CNN this past week discussing what was to be the opening of the season, and more kneeling protests throughout the National Football League. Van Jones’ opinion, like many, is that Colin Kaepernick’ s form of protest shows a “deep patriotism.” He was pitted against right-wing radio talk show host Ben Ferguson.
