To add a mixed number and a fraction, we first need to turn the mixed number into an improper fraction. Once we have an improper fraction and a fraction, we need to get the denominators the same. Once they are the same, the denominator stays the same, and we add the numerators. Then we simplify and/or turn it back into a mixed number.
