In this video we'll be stopping spam comments using Akismet. It's free and it works excellent. Let's start right now.
Log into your WordPress website. If you're still logged in using /wp-admin/... that's not a very safe way, so please watch my tutorial about WordPress security. Because you don't want to get hacked.
When you're logged in, you go to 'Plugins' over there. And you go to 'Add new'. And here we see directly what we need. Akismet Spam Protection. "The best anti-spam protection". Well that's actually not exaggerated, it is the best. Let's press 'Install now' over there, and now we press 'Activate' to kill all that spam. The first thing we do is we need to set up our account, so we're gonna click on this button. Then you will be redirected to the Akismet website. Now if you have a personal website, Akismet is completely free. If you however have a commercial website or blog, you need to get this one. So let's click on 'Get personal' right now. We fill in our email address, and we can change this bar to make it completely free, for a non-commercial license. Fill in your first name and your last name, and use it on the site we want to install it. I don't have ads, I don't sell any products, and I don't promote a business. Press 'Continue with personal subscription' over here. Then we have a email in our email box. So we're gonna copy this code, copy it. And then we paste it in over there, and we press 'Continue'. Now we go back to our email again. And there we have this. Your API key. We're gonna copy it again. Then you go back to WordPress, it's in another tab. And then we go to 'Manually enter an API key' over here. And then we're gonna paste it in, and we press 'Connect with API key'. Well done now it works! If you scroll down on your settings, the only interesting thing to change over here is the strictness. Do you want Akismet to silently discard the worst and most pervasive spam, or do you want everything to put spam in a spam folder for review. It's totally up to you, if you're afraid you will miss some nice comments then use this setting, if you really don't care press on silently discards the worst spam. And press 'Save changes; . So when you now go to your comments over there or over here, Akismet will mark the reactions that it think it is spam, and it does a very good job. As we can see over here is that the pills and the pills and the Paw Patrol and the Johny SEO, all these things are marked as potentially spam. Now what can you do over here, you can just approve it, or you can spam it, or trash it. If you press this button check for spam it will do it automatically. So let's say uh paw patrol.com is... I don't know.... what is this man? Just press approve then this one is approved on your website, and now it's been shown to your other visitors. You can also do this button 'Check for spam'. "Checked three comments, no comments were caught as spam". Well. Now we can train Akismet a little bit, so what we can do? We can put this one into the spam folder. Just click it. Now it has been marked as spam and also been sent out to a Akismet so it can learn about spam. This is also flagged, so we're gonna spam it and this one also, spam it. Great. Now you can see over here at spam you will see all the things that has been put in a spam folder....
Completely spam free...
