Here are my thoughts on the constant symbolism and parallels of smoking with Carol and Daryl from season 5 and 6 of The Walking Dead. Recently, we have seen a lot of moments that show Carol smoking. In my opinion, the cigarettes symbolize something important. They symbolize death. Not only death, but Carol's constant struggle of deciding whether she should kill to protect the group, or stop killing once and for all. Just like that idea that she constantly juggles, she also constantly juggles the use of cigarettes. Sometimes she smokes them a lot. Sometimes she stops smoking them and refuses the offer. Let's head back and use one example of this symbolism. Back in episode 2 of season 6 titled, "JSS," Carol had to kill a bunch of The Wolves to protect the group. If it hadn't been for her, most of the Alexandrians would have been dead. At the end of the episode, she sits down, cries, and smokes a cigarette. Like mentioned earlier, the cigarette represents her choice to accept the death of others by killing them to protect her group. Later on in season 6, she starts to smoke again in the episode titled, "Not Tomorrow Yet." She sits outside and smokes with Tobin. This symbolized and forshadowed the death that would occur with Rick's attack on The Savior's facility the next day. In the same episode, she starts to smoke, sees Maggie, and then throws the cigarette down. This represents once again the idea of death and her struggle of choice. In the next episode titled, "The Same Boat," there was a lot of symbolism involving cigarettes. Towards the beginning of the episode, a Savior named Molly starts to smoke, and Carol asks her not to because Maggie is in the room. After the Savior takes Maggie to another room, Carol asks Molly for a cigarette. She then laughs at Carol for being a hypocrite and gives her a cigarette. This once again represents death and Carol's choice to accept the idea of having to kill The Saviors. This symbolism was used an additional time in the episode where shit lit a cigarette and threw it onto the gas-filled kill floor where the 3 Saviors were. In episode 14 of season 6 titled, "Twice As Far," Carol is seen smoking with Daryl and she then gives her cigarettes to him. We constantly see her swinging on the porch with her ashtray full of cigarettes. At the end of the episode, we see the full ashtray, but Carol is gone. Now that she has stopped smoking the cigarettes and left them in the ashtray, it symbolizes Carol's final choice to not only stop smoking, but to stop killing as well. This is why she leaves Alexandria. The cigarettes represent the idea that she is leaving death behind and continuing on with her new mentality of avoiding killing.
