Survival kits are the buzz words thrown about within the virtual world from "armchair, "TV survivalists" and numerous YouTube channels. They mean different things to different people. Such "survival kits" are often sold as a "Package" comprising of a knife and the "survival kit". Many companies market their "survival kits" with the suggestion that these things can be relied upon should an emergency or situation occurs. Nothing could be further from the truth. AND NOTHING can substitute the grey matter between your ears and being properly prepared for excursions into the wilderness or even a simple no frills day hike. Often these "survival kits", contain cheap and inadequate stuff it hat in real life will serve virtually no purpose.

Here I explain why I would caution the beginner or novice outdoors person/s against relying on the stuff found within these so called "survival kits", and recommend to everyone who hasn't, or is in need of a "refresher course", to undertake a First Aid course. It could save your life and those of others. This advice is based on personal experience.
*Note the wire saw illustrated in this video was NOT the original one supplied. The original one was OK but NOT much better. Wire saws do not work well on any hardwoods, whether they are green or seasoned. They will cut bamboo adequately but that's about it in real practical terms.

If you must have a "survival kit" then make sure it is a custom job with well thought out items. In other words put good dependable quality items into a practical sized rugged and waterproof box/container.

So just to recapitulate, I'm not talking about the Survival kits to be found in lift rafts (these are good-I've seen them but thankfully never had to use them!). I'm talking about the trendy aluminum box-type kits marketed under the banner of "Brand X Survival kit".
Also as far as cooking something in one of these boxes, they are totally impractical for this purpose and one is better off doing it bush style, ie cooking directly on the coals, sticks etc.
