What I was about to say is even though Zion might be the most hyped up player on the PLANET, there’s a college basketball player that’s better than him and his name is RJ Barrett. It’s time to figure how good the #1 ranked college basketball player is and why he’s ranked higher than Zion.
RJ Barrett is a 6’ 7” 208 pounds shooting guard from Canada. If I have any bad Canada jokes in here, I’m sorry in advance. He’s been the best player in his class since his junior year and yeah that means higher than Zion. In Duke’s preseason tour, RJ averaged 31 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists meaning he averaged 1 more point than Zion. RJ Barrett is known for just being effective. He has a herky jerky style of play, can change speeds with the drop of a dime, breaks ankles, and he’s lefty. While Zion may have mass, RJ got length. He has a 6’ 10” wingspan and for a guy who also plays point guard, that’s just lanky. And he uses it well, using his reach to finish layups and keep the ball just outta reach. At the same time, there isn’t a crazy amount athleticism in his game. The man can get up there but you can tell from his layups that it’s just crafty. He has the size to push through contact more, but he kinda chooses not to. RJ’s 3 point shooting ability is once again just average and serviceable. He only shot 39 threes in high school and shot 38.5% which is not enough data to make a conclusion on his 3 point shot. Just a streaky shooter although his mechanics aren’t the best because he has a low release point. Matter of fact, RJ isn’t special at anything athletically, he’s just a good athletic player. RJ is that 2K balanced archetype. He’s skilled enough at everything to the point that there’s no real weakness in his game. Except free throws, man be shooting 57.5% from the free throw line. So why the heck is he the #1 ranked player? So far, what I’ve said makes him look like a 2k default. But there’s a few things at his size that are rare.
For one, this man knows how to direct traffic and make plays. In high school, he only averaged 3.2 assists per game, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Just look at these passes. He’s making advanced passes and being a floor general. At 6’ 7” with a 6’ 10” wingspan, that means that RJ can literally see and pass over people at the point guard spot. It’s gonna be like Kawhi Leonard being guarded by Isaiah Thomas, that wouldn’t be pretty. Actually Isaiah Thomas guarding anyone is an automatic bucket, but you get the point. Another part of RJ that makes him so special is his patience, just like y’all somehow have the patience to watch this video, like seriously wow. RJ decision making skills and waiting for the right opportunity to attack are things I haven’t seen by anyone else in this class. His handles are nice and he uses his length to take longer strides and protect the ball from the defender. He’s keeping his head up and seeing where his teammates are moving. If nothing is open, he brings it back out and moves the ball around and resets. That’s his style of play and it reminds me of James Harden. And before t’all start saying RJ is the next James Harden, he’s not. It’s that herky-jerky style of play and it’s unique. And you know the reason why RJ’s not the next Harden. No it’s not because he can’t shoot yet or the fact that he’s taller, it’s the fact that RJ plays defense. He shifts his feet well when playing on ball defense and uses his wingspan to be pesky. It’s just intangibles that you can’t necessarily find in just anyone. RJ also performs better under the lights. Most scouting reports say that RJ is bricking in practice, but in games he just plays at a higher level and makes those shots. That’s what really matters at the end of the day because we not about to start talking about practice, I don’t want the Allen Iverson to cross me up. RJ has structured his game off these intangibles, working on all parts of his game so that he can be a threat from anywhere and then choose what to do based off what the situation demands rather than forcing it.
RJ also got a hard work ethic. Being with Zion, both are pushing each other. RJ is working on his shot and since he’s Canadian, he’s gotta be nice, eh? That was a dumb joke, I got it outta my system. That’s been RJ’s focus. Now I’ve always said that it’s better to have raw talent rather than skilled talent coming into the NBA because you can develop skills and even now I would take Zion off some overhyped potential BS, but RJ isn’t even close to his NBA potential. In fact, RJ could work on his jumpshot, use more force to bully people, get a post game, work on his handles into the off dribble shots, and more.
