The Syrian Arab Army reportedly asserted full control over a village located about 45km southwest of Islamic State-controlled Tabqa Military Airport. The advances follow previous developments in the framework of an offensive against Islamic State along Route 42, which connects Raqqa City to the town of Ithriyah in Hama Province.
The advance into Raqqa Province is of symbolic significance as it’s the first time government troops have entered the province since they were ousted by Islamic State militants in August of 2014. As such, it remains possible that pro-regime forces are capitalizing on the current increase in hostilities in the area north of Raqqa City, between Islamic State militants and the Syrian Democratic Forces, which likely led to deployments of Islamic State militants away from the area south of Raqqa City. As pro-government forces will likely attempt to advance deeper into Raqqa Province alongside Route 42 over the coming days and weeks, Islamic State is likely to intensify asymmetric attacks on pro-regime forces here in an effort to impede any progress. With this in mind, heavy fighting between the two parties will likely be recorded in the area over the coming days and weeks.
