Cybersecurity is the combination of processes, practices, and technologies designed to protect networks, computers, programs, data and information from attack, damage or unauthorized access.
This Course will help you in learning about the basic concepts of Cybersecurity along with the methodologies that must be practiced ensuring information security of an organization. Starting from the Ground level Security Essentials, this course will lead you through Cryptography, Computer Networks & Security, and Application Security, Data & Endpoint Security, idAM (Identity & Access Management), Cloud Security, Cyber-Attacks and various security practices for businesses.
Welcome to our introduction to cyber security section of the course. In this section, we're going to talk about what cyber security is and why we need cyber security. And we're also going to take a look at some actual of quantitative data. So we're going to take a look at the state of cyber security in and to help you to understand quantitatively so we're going to kick things off by defining what cyber security is. Cyber security is the practice of protecting our IT systems, our IT networks, our devices and our data that resides on that network, programs that we have that our IT devices and systems use. And the goal is to protect all that from unauthorized access and digital based attacks. In
also want you to understand is that cyber security as a field and as a career is really diverse Take a look at all the different opportunities that are available to you. when you're looking at this fields a potential career, why do we need cyber security? Well, everything is connected. Everything seems like it's connected now to the Internet, from our computers, which we've had connected to the Internet for 20 plus years, to our smartphone since the advent of the iPhone and Android phones, and our TVs as well .We have devices like the Roku that allows us to connect our devices to the Internet. Everybody seems to have a smart TV now where they're using Netflix or Disney Plus or YouTube TV, you name it. Just about everything is connected to the Internet now and also our homes .So if you haven't heard the term IoT ,that stands for Internet of Things, and that's a variety of different protocols that allow us to connect different devices to a network. So if we think about our homes, everything from our lights to our refrigerators to our thermostats to our garage doors and our security systems , everything is connected to the Internet now and also our cars. So cars are nothing more than computers with engines now, and they're connected to a network .And more often than not, that's going to be the Internet. And most importantly, hackers are connected to the Internet .So whenever we have anything connected to a network and the Internet, we
need to be mindful that we're going to be at risk of being hacked by a malicious user. And so when everything around us is connected, we're always going to beat risk and it's going to be important for us to protect ourselves .Now let's talk about the importance of cyber security from the perspective of a business. We need to protect our organization. So if we run a business or let's say that we are a nonprofit or we'rea governmental agency, we want to do our due diligence and due care to make sure that we protect our organization and our assets. And when I'm talking about our assets, I’m talking about our IT infrastructure, our customers, our employees, our data, our intellectual property rights, you name it, we want to protect it. We want to make sure that we protect all of our data, especially our stakeholder and customer data, and make sure that we inspire confidence with our customers and our employees and our stakeholders. And lastly, when we do all this, when we perform effective cyber security, we are increasing business productivity because if we don't have adequate cyber security measures, we’re constantly dealing with cyber security threats and issues and incidents. And in the world of IT, we call that putting out fires. Well, actually, in the world of business, we call that putting out fires. And when you're allocating all of your time and your money and
what I did for my courses is I did some research in the winter of to see where we were with cyber security, and to pull some data in to share it with you. And so what I want to do is focus in on some key areas and talk about them. So the first thing that I identified is that hackers are targeting small businesses now. And specifically, what I found is that %of all cyber-attacks are now aimed at small businesses.
