Welcome to another quick tutorial.
Today we are talking about how we can stick splines to planes in order to create things like roads, trails, or simply just lines. This tutorial will show you how to use project and round to quickly accomplish this task.
First, we are going to create a plane and use soft selection to make it look more realistic. I'm going to click on some areas and pull them up to simulate rolling hills.
Next we are going to switch to our top view and draw a bezier spline over the top of the plane. In no particular way, we will click several points until the area is covered.
Now, we will go to mesh - spline - project. We have three options. When ready, we will click apply. Our spline has now been stuck to our plane. But, as you see, with only a half dozen points, this is not enough to do an adequate job.
Now, we will use round by going mesh - spline - round and we will bump up the number of points to 60, or 10 times our original. Now, we will click apply and we see immediately that we have a much more natural curvature.
But, we must now re-project, so we go back and click "apply" again and there we have it, a nice line stuck to our terrain.
We can use the sweep object, and a rectangle spline to create a roadway or trail.
We can create a material with noise in order to simulate road material. Finally, we will add a material to our terrain and we can now see the distinction between our road and terrain.
