Scenes in a workplace setting have the potential to be very powerful on a showreel, because they are high stakes and show conflict where it most often happens, the workplace!
This particular scene deals with sensitive issues around power dynamics in the workplace. It begins like a standard workplace meeting, where a boss is talking to an employee about her performance. It takes a turn when the young woman in the scene confronts her manager about his inappropriate behaviour.
Working on a scene of this nature requires a lot of trust and communication with the actors involved. My client, Melissa White, did a great job of bringing truth and subtlety to a very complex situation. Luke McCulloch had the very difficult job of portraying a man who has been accused on multiple occasions of disturbing behaviour with women in their company.
On the one hand, a scene like this is ideal for an actor's showreel, because it is an important topic, and allows the actors to work on something that is both topical and powerful. However, there is also risk, because if it is not truthfully handled, the viewer will disregard it. Luckily, the actors in this scene did a courageous job in bringing the truth of the characters to life.
